We all know that Steven Wilson is a musical centipede when it comes to making and producing music. Porcupine Tree, no-man, Bass Communion, just to name a few… But have you ever heard about his project named Incredible Expanding Mindfuck?
What is Incredible Expanding Mindfuck? You can’t compare it with Bass Communion, because that’s more based on experimental ambient/drone music, while I.E.M. can be considered as a mixture of experimental, psychedelic and krautrock, leaning towards the early solo music he made under the name of Porcupine Tree (like the albums On The Sunday Of Life and Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape). It’s mostly instrumental, sometimes with spoken words and fragments of movies/documentaries. This is probably not some music which all Steven Wilson fans would adore, but if you don’t know I.E.M. it’s surely worth to check it out!
Headphone Dust is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s pure magic. It’s a very ‘simple’ song with an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar and some soundscapes, and somehow this song makes me cry every time I listen to it.
There’s an official limited edition box set of the complete I.E.M. discography released on the Tonefloat label a couple of years ago, and I still want to purchase that box someday if it’s still available. Please check out the videos below and let me know what you think about the music!
A big hug, as always!
Iris, aka Ier!

Thanks for pulling this one off the shelf – I must go and hunt my copy down and spin it again. Lol, I picked mine up at a P.Tree gig and i remember the merch desk guy getting annoyed at me – I was keen to get a copy before they sold out and he was struggling to get the desk set up. Didn’t realise til I got home that it was a signed copy…
