Cirrha Niva – Out Of The Freakshow (2016)

Standard

I don’t know if this genre exists, but I would categorize this music under neo progressive metal. Neo prog metal with symphonic influences. The musical compositions have a neo progressive rock feeling, while most songs are filled with heavy guitars and typical metal guitar solos. There are also a few hunches of Tool here and there in some of the tracks. The guitar solos are good, sometimes very surprising and well thought about. Legrand is a good singer, but not spectacular in my opinion. The sound of the album is fine, but the drums sound a bit too compressed, and the total picture misses some dynamics. Continue reading

Iris interviews: John Myung (The Jelly Jam, Dream Theater)

Standard

Written interview!

Everybody knows that John Myung is the bassist of the well-known progressive metal band Dream Theater, but John is also involved in another project, named The Jelly Jam. This super group has Rod Morgenstein of Winger and The Dixie Dregs on drums, and Ty Tabor of King’s X on lead vocals and guitar. I spoke with John about their latest studio album named Prophet/Profit, which was released in May 2016 (you can read my review of this album here). I had the honour to interview John Myung in May via Skype. Continue reading

Progcity Festival, Musicon Den Haag, 28 May 2016

Standard

After a wonderful first edition of Progcity Festival (you can read my review of the first edition here) it was only a matter of time when the second edition would be held. Organizer Gert-Jan van Middelkoop had two bands lined up I’ve never seen perform live before; the Dutch band Profuna Ocean and German band Ashby. I know Profuna Ocean’s music (I reviewed their latest album In Vacuum, you can read the review here), but I never heard any music from Ashby. While Profuna Ocean had played a couple of times before at Musicon, Ashby was playing their first ever gig in The Netherlands. Continue reading

The Jelly Jam – Prophet/Profit (2016)

What do you get when you combine three (prog) rock/metal heavyweights? Of course, we do know a lot of super groups like Asia, Transatlantic, and Liquid Tension Experiment… But have we ever heard of The Jelly Jam? This album named Prophet/Profit is their fourth studio album, and I have to admit I never heard of them before. Continue reading
