Top 5 Opeth albums by Iris

Standard

Opeth will be releasing their twelfth studio album named Sorceress at the end of this month. I’m very curious about the album, and I will probably write a review about it soon! In the meantime I made a top five of my most favourite Opeth albums so far…

Circle Unbroken – Vincere (2016)

Standard

A debut album from a Belgian female fronted gothic metal band. A tough genre to stand out from the crowd, because there are tons of female fronted metal bands out there (you can read another review of a female fronted metal band here). Most of the tracks on Vincere are quite up tempo, and are around three or four minutes long. The album itself lasts forty minutes, so it’s not a long album. Continue reading

Beyond God – A Moment Of Black (2016)

Standard

Let’s start this review with the album sleeve. The artwork is very cool and makes me curious. It does give hints that it’s probably progressive or symphonic metal. It is the debut album of a Dutch band named Beyond God, which is a female fronted metal band. I’m not a big fan of female fronted metal, because there are sadly a lot of bands who try to copy each other in this genre. The usual guitar riffs, orchestral bits and pieces, and don’t forget the huge, dark, swaying dresses (and the occasional bats)! Continue reading

Sebas Honing – The Big Shift (2016)

Standard

The Big Shift is Sebas Honing’s third (or fifth, I’m not sure about that) solo album. Sebas is a talented multi-instrumentalist and does a lot of lead vocals. He’s accompanied by his wife Petra Honing on lead & backing vocals and Christiaan Bruin on drums. It’s a concept album which gives a view about Sebas Honing’s current life. The music is a combination of metal, progressive rock and even pop rock. It’s a mixture of powerful uplifting tracks and more quiet (semi) acoustic rock songs. You can also hear that some repeating musical themes come back in several songs. There are no long tracks on this album, all tracks are in between three and six minutes long. I quite like the apocalyptic-like artwork on the sleeve, it is very nicely done. Continue reading

Robby Valentine, Bizarro World Vinyl Release Party, live at the P3 Purmerend, 20 February 2016

Standard

The album Bizarro World, which is Robby Valentine’s  most recent album, was released back in 2014. This year the album was  finally released as a limited edition vinyl album. People who pre-ordered the album were invited to join the official vinyl release party in the P3 at Purmerend. This  was the first time I ever went to this venue and to a concert of Robby Valentine, so I was very curious that evening. Continue reading
